Sample and Example: How are they different?

Jorrakay (Thailand): Sample and Example, How are they different?

Mark: Well a sample is something you can try. You can taste it, or try using it

Jorrakay: When we go to the theatre, we can see the short movie, it should called a sample movie or example movie?

Mark: We don't use sample or example like that. We call that a movie "preview". An example is used to show how something might be used. Like an example sentence using vocabulary you just learned.

Identify, Specify and Indicate: how are they different?

Jorrakay (guest): I am from Thailand. I am looking for someone who can clarify me about English. Can some one clarify me how different between identify, specify and indicate?

Mark: Hi Jorrakay, great question! So you want to know the difference between identity, specify and indicate.

Identity is like a name, everything has a name, that would be like your identity... for example your identity on this website is "Jorrakay".

Specify is to point to a specific item, to get more detailed about a point.

Indicate is to point out something, like you might indicate you are hungry by rubbing and pointing at your stomach.

Hope that helps!

"I would like an update about you"

Anni (China) asks: What does "I would like an update about you" mean?

Mark says: "Update" means recent information. So, if someone asks you for an update about you, they want to know how you are recently. Another way of saying this is : "So tell me the latest about you"

Example (1) : Two people chat on the Internet after not chatting for a long time.

Person 1: I really miss you, I would be happy to get some updates about you.

Person 2: I really miss you too! Recently I have been so busy working on my new project....

Example (2) : Two people meet who have not seen each other in a long time.

Person 1: Hi! How are you? Long time no see!

Person 2: Its great to see you again, tell me the latest about you!
