B1 (Intermediate) means being able to communicate on familiar topics with reasonable fluency. For the SELT it means speaking and listening — reading and writing are not tested.
Use English every day
Daily contact is more effective than one long session per week. Consistency beats intensity.
Speak, even when uncomfortable
The gap between understanding and production closes only through speaking practice.
Learn vocabulary in context
Learn from authentic texts — articles, podcasts, conversations — not word lists.
Focus on grammar patterns, not rules
Being able to use the present perfect automatically is more useful than knowing the rule.
Listen to real English at natural speed
Start with subtitles, then remove them as your listening improves.
Get corrected regularly
A qualified teacher who corrects errors specifically accelerates improvement.
Track progress against CEFR
The CEFR self-assessment grid is freely available online. Use it every 6-8 weeks.
