How to find a good English teacher

Not all English teachers are equally qualified. Here is what to look for.

Why not use a general teaching platform?

Platforms like Preply and italki allow anyone to list as a teacher regardless of qualification. FindEnglishTeacher.com requires every teacher to submit a verifiable teaching qualification before going live.

What to look for

A verified teaching qualification

CELTA and DELTA require externally assessed practical teaching. Any teacher who cannot produce a verifiable certificate should be treated with caution.

Experience in your specific subject

A general English teacher is not automatically an IELTS or SELT specialist. Ask specifically.

A free trial or level check

Most qualified teachers offer a short introductory session. This is a good sign.

Questions to ask before booking

What is your teaching qualification?
How many students have you prepared for this exam?
Do you offer a free level check?

Frequently asked questions

CELTA is the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, awarded by Cambridge Assessment English. It requires minimum 120 hours of training including observed practical teaching.
Some unverified teachers are excellent. But without verification you cannot know — particularly risky with an exam or visa deadline.
