SELT Preparation Timeline

How long does SELT preparation take?

The honest answer depends on your current level. Realistic timelines for every starting point — from A1 beginner to B1 ready.

The honest answer depends on your current level. Below are realistic preparation timelines based on 30+ years of teaching experience.

Starting level

A1 — Complete beginner

Preparation time

4–6 months

Build from the foundations. Assumes regular study (3–4 hours per week) with a specialist tutor. Focus: vocabulary, basic grammar, speaking practice from the first session.

Starting level

A2 — Pre-intermediate (targeting B1 SELT)

Preparation time

6–10 weeks

You have the basics in place but need to extend range and fluency. Focused preparation with a tutor targeting the B1 SELT format is the most efficient approach.

Starting level

A2/B1 boundary — almost there

Preparation time

2–4 weeks

You are close. Understanding the test format, practising the specific tasks, and building confidence is often all that is needed.

Starting level

B1 — Intermediate (format preparation only)

Preparation time

1–2 weeks

If your English is genuinely at B1, you mainly need to understand the test format and practise with a tutor in exam conditions. Do not underestimate this step.

Starting level

B2 or above — preparing for A2 SELT

Preparation time

3–5 days

If your English is above B1 and you are preparing for an A2 SELT, one or two sessions to understand the format is usually sufficient.

The biggest risk is leaving it too late

SELT test centres have limited availability, particularly around busy visa application periods. Book your test date first — then work backwards to plan your preparation. Do not wait until you feel ready before booking.

Frequently asked questions

If you are already at B1 level, one week of focused preparation — understanding the format and practising with a tutor — can be enough. If you are below B1, one week is not realistic.
This depends on your starting level. Most candidates preparing for a B1 SELT from A2 need 6–10 sessions of 60 minutes spread over 4–8 weeks. Your tutor will advise after a level check.
Self-study can supplement tutor sessions but is rarely efficient on its own. A specialist tutor who knows the test format will save you significant time and reduce the risk of preparing the wrong things.
Tell your tutor immediately. They will prioritise the highest-impact activities for the time available and focus on the specific criteria that determine a pass or fail.
