What is Trinity GESE?
GESE (Graded Examinations in Spoken English) is Trinity College London's suite of face-to-face oral examinations. For UK visa purposes, two grades are relevant: Grade 5 = A2 level (for Family visas) and Grade 6 = B1 level (for Skilled Worker visas and ILR). The examination is conducted by a trained Trinity examiner — either at an approved centre or via video.
How the Trinity GESE examination works
Opening
Introduction and personal questions
The examiner introduces themselves and asks simple personal questions to put you at ease. Your name, where you are from, what you do. This part is not graded — it is a warm-up.
Topic
Your prepared topic presentation
You speak about your chosen topic for 1–3 minutes. The examiner listens and may ask one or two follow-up questions. This is the highest-weight section — preparation pays off here.
Conversation
Discussion on your topic area
The examiner asks questions related to your topic area to explore your vocabulary range, grammatical accuracy, and ability to sustain conversation. You cannot predict the exact questions.
Close
Final questions and close
A brief wind-down. The examiner may ask one general question unrelated to your topic before closing. The full examination lasts 8–12 minutes total.
